Bubba & I hit 2 Flea Markets yesterday! I didn’t find anything all that exciting but I did pick up this ugly old hat for $6.00:
I buy these these old hats for the vintage flowers. Many times, they’re velvet and silk and usually in very good shape. I buy them when I find them for around $4 – $6 and then I take them apart. This may seem like a rather dumb tutorial but I thought someone out there may like know how to do this.
In most cases, the glue on these hats is rather brittle and the flowers will come off easily but I have had a few that were a big old bear to get off!!!
First, I started on this one by removing the leaves:
The leaves & flowers are usually glued to each other. Find a starting point and carefully start pulling the leaves or flowers away from the mesh base.
Silk flower petals may tear a little. Do your best to carefully pull them off and keep in mind that if they tear, it adds to the charm and raggyness of the flowers. I for one, love the raggy look of vintage things! They can always be slightly trimmed with a pair of scissors.
There may be areas where you just have to cut the mesh base to get the flowers off.
Once I had the flowers off of the sides of the hat, I cut the mesh base on the top off.
This just makes it a wee bit easier to get the rest of the flowers off.
Continue to carefully pull the flowers off the top.
I pulled them all off the top of the hat and then I pulled them off of each other. And now I have a nice bagful of silk & velvet vintage flowers & leaves!
It takes about 1/2 an hour to tear one of these old hats apart but it’s well worth it. The flowers can be used on crazy quilting, art quilts, cards, art dolls…just about anything! They can be sewn on or glued on with a glue gun. The can also be glittered!!!
If you find one for a few dollars, give it a try! It’s fun to re-purpose these old flowers on new projects!
When I finished tearing that old hat apart, I did some baking! My Kitchaid was calling to me! LOL!!! I made some Banana muffins with chocolate chips:
I just used a regular Banana Muffin recipe and replaced the nuts with chips. Scott always laughs at me because I put chocolate chips in everything!!!
Then I made a batch of Sugar cookies with cinnamon and chocolate chips:
This is my basic Drop Sugar cookie recipe. You can find it in my sidebar. I added 3/4 of a teaspoon of cinnamon to it.
By the time I was done baking, it was late afternoon and Bubba had gotten the headlights on our Model A:
Is this incredible or what? He’s been working on this car for 7 years now and it’s really starting to come together. He has the running boards on it now too!
Finally for today, I’ll leave you with an update on my Autumn purse block:
This is ready for beading now. I’ll start on that later today!
Before I head out and start my day, I wanted to say thanks to everyone for all the sweet comments that you’ve left for me on my depression & anxiety discussions. If any one would like to share a link to the articles on their blog, please feel free to do so. I truly feel that if I can help even one person who’s going through a horrible depression experience, then my energy in writing these articles is so worth it. My next article will be available this week.
Every year the local car club puts on a show in the park on Sunday afternoon during the festival. Of course there was no way to take a photo of every car and post it here, so I took photos of a few favorites

This next car has a story. We talked to one of the people who owns it now. It was his brothers car, but he passed away before he could work on it. So the rest of the family got together and finished it in his memory. The numbers above the finish line are 38.08.13 – meaning he lived to be 38 years, 8 months and 13 days. Way to young to have passed on. But his family did an amazing job! What a wonderful way to remember someone.

I know it’s not a car – but I like it!

Stay tuned for Part 3 on Wednesday – The Quilt Show!
Good Morning Everyone~
I hope your week is off to a good start! In a few hours I will be driving to Chicago for CHA! Woot Woot! I am so excited I can’t even stand it!!!!
I’m so looking forward to the vacation from school….although I will be wondering what I am missing this week….good thing I have a group member I am close to who will keep me in the loop!
It’s hard to believe 2 weeks have already passed since the debut of the Wild Orchid Crafts Challenge Blog!!! WOW we are thrilled to bits with all of the entries…we hope that you will join us for Challenge #2 which is LACE! Use lace on your projects….
For my card I have decided to make an easel card…it’s been a while since I last made one and I love how these look! Papers are K&Company. I’ve been seeing quite a few people stamping their images on Kraft cardstock and then coloring. I thought I would give this a go with my rustic/western theme.
For my image, I’ve used Howdy from Sampler Edition #5 by Elisabeth Bell exclusively for SCACD. My lace is from Wild Orchid Crafts, it’s the Natural Cotton Lace. I’ve pleated the lace around Howdy and the outside border of the card….love the look this gives. WOC has LOTS of fantastic lace!!! Make sure you go and check them out.
Howdy has been colored with Copics on kraft cardstock. **TIP** One thing I have noticed when coloring on kraft cardstock is that you have to use darker shades of colors. I wanted light pink but when I started coloring with the original colors I had picked out they didn’t even show up on the paper…so make sure you use a darker shade for your wanted colors. Howdy’s belt and tops of her boots have been painted with Copic Opaque White and then gone over with Viva Decor Glitter Liner in Hologram. The glitter liner was also added to the flowers on her hat and shirt. Then Viva Decor Cream Pearl Liner was used around the scalloped Oval nestie.
The flowers are all from Wild Orchid and consist of 35mm Wild Rose, 30mm Wild Rose, 25mm Rose, 15mm Roses, 10mm roses, and 6mm closed rosebuds. Flowers were adhered with Incredibly Tacky Glue. I am telling this glue is the BEST for adhering flowers! I used to use glue dots, but after a month the flowers would fall off. With Incredibly Tacky I no longer have random flowers falling off cards…it’s amazing!!! I total must have! The jewels in the flower arrangement are Light Pink Crystal Drops. Flowers have been sparklized with diamond stickles.
Here’s the bottom panel of the card. Sentiment is from Verve and nested on top a Labels One die and scalloped oval. Ribbon is Baby Pink 25mm Organza Ribbon also from Wild Orchid! They have a fabulous collection of colors. The bow was created with my Bow Easy.
Corners were decorated with pearls made by my Viva Decor Cream Pearl Pen.
I hope you’ve enjoyed my lace creation. Now make sure you head over to the WOC Challenge Blog to see the rest of the DT’s amazing creations!!! And head over to Wild Orchid to get some lace, flowers and to check out all their newest adds…I hear there’s lots of bling!

Hi Friends~
I hope you are enjoying your weekend! Today I have to go to school again to do some group work….I guess that has gotten to be my Sunday routine. Well at least tomorrow is the only day this week I have to go to school…because Monday at 5pm I will be CHICAGO BOUND…..CHA here I come!!!! Can you tell I am still super duper excited?! Hopefully I will be able to make it to CHA without needing a boat to get there! The upper Midwest has been getting nailed with rain….there are cities and major highways flooded, a sink hole that swollowed an SUV the other night, and many homes damaged. I’m going to have to do some research to make sure Mom and I have a safe route.
Now….I’m sure my title has caught your attention! This week Susana has some major excitement going on over at the SCACD Blog! Starting TODAY you can enter to win some AMAZING BLOG CANDY! And our Sister Store, Quixotic Paperie also has a second chance at winning some new release candy! And if 2 chances aren’t enough….you have a 3rd chance to win some candy over at Victoria Case’s Blog! How’s that for candy? Then on Friday we will have a blog hop showcasing the newest Victoria Case for SCACD release! You definitely don’t want to miss this! I absolutely love all of the newbies….but that’s all I can tell you!
**Plus the “SCACD Viva Hop Blog Candy” is still running! Click –>HERE<– and –>HERE<– for your chance to win some awesome VIVA Candy!**
In July Altona, my home town, holds the Manitoba Sunflower Festival. It starts on Friday with a few things happening around town, but Saturday is the big day. Everything begins with the morning parade
Waiting for the parade to start. Right to left – Brad (hat), Heather (Logan’s girlfriend), Logan, Luke and Zach (friend of the family)

Why does the first thing in a parade have to be bag pipes? Not my favorite sound.
We are only 6 miles from the ND border, and there are quite a few Americans that come up for shopping and the Festival.

Apparently every guy needs a motorized bar stool?
I want one of these!! But maybe in yellow or red.
Just what every one needs! A motorized couch
The gentleman in red owns the local Furniture store.
Brad wanted a photo of the truck with bubbles.
Last summer Luke worked at Fort Garry Fire Trucks in the Engineering department. Altona was getting a new Fire Truck that year and Luke even got do design a few small pieces for it. This is the Fire Truck.
Since it’s a farming community you have to have some machinery in the parade

I didn’t take photo’s of every float or entry – that would just take too long! Stay tuned for Part 2.
I’m so so busy with my gorgeous grandson, that I’ve had no time to make any new images, but this has been so incredible time for me, it’s so great to be a granny. I will be back with new ideas on August. But now I want to share a little bit of fun with everyone. I have a crazy offer on Itkupillishop; one dollar weekend sale (granny is running out of money). Go and check the offer and take advantage of my money shortage.
I just wanted to thank all that left comments and emailed me about the problem I had with plagiarism last week. I was overwhelmed by the amount of support I received, you are just the best! The problem has now been resolved, the company concerned has removed the photos of my copied work and although retrospective permission was sought by them I refused, given what had happened. Hopefully this
I leave today for CHA. It will be my tenth visit (three times as a newspaper reporter, seven as a professional crafter), but I’ll be doing something new this time – helping to set up the iLoveToCreate booth from scratch!
The show doesn’t open until Tuesday, so that means our team will have two days to transform our space from concrete to craftabulous. That’s 48 whole hours! However, being a reality show junkie, I know those minutes will disappear faster than a tube of squeeze glitter in a kindergarten classroom. I’m bringing my Flip Video to film all the action. I know there will be plenty, I can smell it already. I’m preparing for this gig in many ways. I’ve already bought a pair of cushiony insoles for my sneakers. Not just any insoles, these were labeled “WORKER” for construction and factory workers!
Let me fast forward to my crafty checklist for when the show actually opens. I’m there to demo in the iLoveToCreate booth, teach a class at the Super Show Craft Academy, do a live web broadcast with Cool2Craft, sneak in all the make-and-takes I can, and of course mingle, chat, hug, joke, play and HAVE FUN!!
To reach my MHP (Maximum Happy Potential), these are the things I’m bringing. In no particular order:
Scissor necklace. This is a cord necklace that has a mini-set of scissors attached to it. You never know when you need to cut something! However, I learned at the last show that scissor necklaces are more sought after than the One Ring. My last set was misplaced. Somehow, some way, I’ll score a new one in time for the show.
Permanent markers. There are plenty of crafty people walking around asking for artful contributions to their clothing, books, fabric swatches, emergency signs, suitcases, etc.
Portable handiwipes. I have this bad habit of trying to walk from Point A to Point B, but get sidetracked with the awesome make-and-takes going on. So I’ll sit down and speed craft and then I have to remove the evidence from my hands before I get back to my assigned workstation. Handiwipes are perfect for this! They are also good because many times I’ll come across a fellow crafter who needs one badly, and it always feels good to help out!
Batteries for my Flip Video. They are so expensive at the hotel! I buy a big package before I leave.
Handmade goodies to give away and trade. I always make a batch of items to give away to people I meet, or to favorite friends, or even the clerk behind the coffee stand. One year I made bracelets. I’ve also made magnets, pins, rings, etc. It’s kind of an unwritten ritual that crafties do at this event. It’s a fun way to show camaraderie and a love for our community. It’s a great way to give shout outs when people ask “Where did you get that?”
Handmade show pieces to wear. I always like to wear new jewelry I made, or clothing items. Everyone does this, it’s a great way to express yourself and share your talents without even saying a word! They make great conversation pieces.
Crafty 911 Kit. Needle and thread, buttons, Band-Aid, glue, safety pins.
An artful apron. There is glitter, glue, and paint flying from every direction sometimes, it’s good to have an apron to protect your fancy wearables. (I make sure the apron has secret pockets to collect stuff!)
The Comfiest Shoes in the World. Heels – no. New shoes that need to be broken in – nada. Flip flops – nil. The best way to soak up all that the convention has to offer is to feel light, airy and springy like a ninja, and that only comes from good shoes.
Lots of business cards. Not just any business cards though. I make sure they are up-to-date and relay my “signature story,” so people will remember me long after the show has ended.
Press kit. You just never know who you will meet in the ladies room or in the coffee line. Editors, producers, retail buyers, movie stars, etc. I don’t suggest huge press kits though, people like sleek and light. Edit it down so it packs a punch!
One almost empty carry-on. This is because I always have gobs of samples, books, projects, and supplies to bring home.
Makeup to go. Lots of talking is going on, as well as pictures with friends that end up on Facebook and blogs. Lipstick wears off fast, so does eyeliner. I hate seeing pictures after the show, and thinking – “Geez! Why didn’t I freshen up my makeup?”
Mini-notepad. I always get inspired for craft ideas or for the novels I write. I also pick up many tips from my crafty comadres and know if I don’t write them down, I’ll forget.
Phone charger in my purse! I’m an iPhone addict for everything and I begin to twitch and itch once the battery goes below halfway. I plug my baby in wherever I can.
Okay, that’s it. Did I miss anything? What are your must-take items?
Peace, love, and glitter!
Kathy
P.S. My publisher is sending a box of my new crafty-themed novel for me to give away all next week. Mention it to me, and I’ll give you one!
