It’s amazing how many shops on Etsy use recycled materials for their items. I found this wonderful shop while searching for cool recycled items. Would love to try the dryer sheets sometime. zJayne also has wonderful altered art, pouches, cards and more!
*Where are you from? Tell us a bit about yourself.
Northern Ohio, near Lake Erie and Cleveland.
*How did you decide on your shop name?
My name is Jane. Frankly, try searching Jane and see the slew of Janesssss and well, I am not completely internet savvy, so I wanted something that when searched, brought me up easily. Search zJayne and you get me only! With that said, hindsight, use an “a” first…hence, my blog is artzJayne!
*What got you started in recycling?
My art assemblage is all about recycling, using found objects, broken treasured jewelry and the like. One holiday season I made tShirt bags and stuffed them with groceries for gifts. I couldn’t believe the feedback and excitement about how much they were being reused. That started all the tShirt pieces and parts and the rest is just amazing.
*What’s your supply addiction; is there a specific color or type of supply you just can’t pass up?
I have so many ideas and found objects for my art. I still cannot pass up a vintage spoon or unusual metal object that I can see re purposed into something artful. It’s definitely addictive to collect found objects for art. So many pieces, ideas, so little time.
*What motivates or inspires you to create?
Often music, emotions, and reading are behind my inspiration. With my upcycled tShirt line, it’s having so much useful material, fonts, sleeves, leftovers that inspire to find useful ways to further them along.
*Which item in your shop did you enjoy making the most and why?
One that comes to mind is the original piece from this postcard. It is called “Home to Myself” and often when I get in a creative zone, I really don’t know where it comes from and I myself am moved by the longevity of feelings each piece can invoke. Wow, that’s deep, but true. I’m partial to this piece. It was a custom order for another amazingly talented artist. She had it for some time and gifted it to her daughter upon her wedding and wrote me about how much it meant to be able to pass it on.

*Do you have a blog?
I do, I do …and it’s an artzJayne blog:

*What is your favorite shop that uses recycled materials, and/or your favorite blog about recycling?
I have a couple favorites. I am always inspired by the way Polarity helps promote us artists through her magnetic lockets. I keep special wishes in mine.

P.S. Check out my new novel and Crafty Chica product line!
Author Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez is one of my writing heroes. I remember hearing an interview with her on CNN talking about the sale of The Dirty Girls Social Club, her debut novel. I immediately went out and bought and soaked up every word. Down the road, she came to Phoenix for a book signing, and then later on as a speaker at the Hispanic Women’s Conference.
I remember telling her “I’m writing a novel!” and then thinking to myself, “Kathy, you are a dork, everyone probably tells her that!” Alisa has never made me feel like a dork. She’s always encouraged me to keep going and to never give up. Alisa paved the way for so many of contemporary Latina authors!
Anyway, now you know why I’m so thrilled that she chose my book as this month’s selection of her new ELLA (English Language Latina Authors) Book Club! I encourage all of you to sign up to be a member!
Here is an ultra sweet video she made for GLITTER!
P.S. About me being in the characters, I must admit, yes, there is a bit of me in each one of them, just exaggerated to make the storylines juicier!

I’ve been admiring so many in the blogosphere that are taking old/unwearable clothes and remaking them into new, beautiful things. I’d really like to try a pretty ruffle shirt like the one my BFF made from her husband’s old dress shirt. But first things first, as I have a growing mountain of clothing in my craft room that needs fixing or updating.
My most urgent need is jeans to wear tucked inside my newish lovely boots. I didn’t own a pair of skinny jeans until a couple of weeks ago. After I bought one pair I got the idea to convert my old bootcut jeans (which are too short now anyway) into skinny jeans, like I’ve seen on some YouTube videos.
People, this is the easiest wardrobe revamp you could hope for. Really. It takes like twenty minutes and can save you some serious jean money.
This is the process in a nutshell:
1) Turn your old pair of bootcut jeans inside out and lay them down flat. Lay your favorite pair of skinny jeans on top.

2) Find out which seam on your old jeans has the pretty topstitching. Align the edges of the skinny legs along the bootcut seam that is topstitched (this could be the outside seam or the inside seam). You don’t want to take in the seam that is topstitched. It will look funny since you can’t replicate the topstitching. You want to take in the side that has a regular seam so your new one will blend in. As it happens, the pair I was working with didn’t have topstitching on either side.
3) Once it is all aligned carefully and you have the seams nice and flat, trace along the edge of the skinny leg to mark your new seam line on the bootcut leg. Pin in place, taking care to match up the hem of your old jeans nicely.

4) Using a heavy duty needle on your machine (really. don’t skip this step), sew your new seams on each leg. Now before you trim and finish the new seams, try the jeans on to be sure they fit the way you like. You may need to make minor adjustments before you finish and press your seams.
Voila. You really can’t tell where my new seam starts and the old one ends. Just saved myself some money. Oh, yeah.
This is an unexpected Glitter post!
Elli, a reader, wrote me after she finished the novel and asked for my address so she could send a little sumthang-sumthang. I love surprises! Her package arrived yesterday and the biggest smile spread across my face when I opened it.
She created all-natural perfume oils inspired by Estrella, Chloe and Ofie (the characters in my book)! She came up with her own interpretation of the scents, based on the ladies’ lives and personalities. I love these one-of-a-kind treasures so much and plan to wear them whenever I feel the spirit of one of the craftistas.
Here are Elli’s inspirations for the scents she created (so creative!):
ESTRELLA (Star): Sparkling pink sugar crystals, dusky violet and sweet pea sprays and a Day of the Dead ofrenda covered in rose pedals.
OFELIA: Grainy vanilla lattes and a garden fresh bunch of mixed flowers, topped with a bit of the fastest hook in the land looping warm wool.
CHLOE: No-nonsense, ambitious woods and spices, sparkled up with a citrusy, glittery, mandarin kick. Smells even better when warmed by hot television lights.
